After graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) Kitt worked as a freelance illustrator who loved to show you her spin on your concept.

During her career her creative projects included store windows for the Learning Tree, brochure for the KC Symphonic Orchestra, painting for Great Wolf Lodge, street art and window art for the Hotel Phillips and cover art for Freestate Comiccon, just to name a few.

Kitt passed away unexpectedly Jan. 2, 2020. During her memorial services a great number of people commented on her empathy and her giving nature, whether it be support of a fellow student, time to help friends and colleagues, or just lending an ear. Her whimsical artistic style and giving personality was a boon to those who knew her.

To continue her legacy, her freelance company, Simply Kitts Illustrations, was converted into Simply Kitts, a 501(c)(3)nonprofit corporation whose goal is to create and enhance scholarships in her name to benefit traditional illustration students at the Kansas City Art Institute.

The Kayleigh “Kitt” Van Hassel Memorial Endowment Award is for junior and senior students attending KCAI. As we all know school supplies can be rather expensive, art supplies especially so. At this point in their studies they have generally exhausted available scholarships and are frequently on their own to find the funds to purchase the supplies necessary to finish their end of term projects. As her parents, we remember the struggles Kitt often had in meeting these demands. To that end we chose to create an endowment that would help meet the needs of these students As we continue to raise funds for the endowment we will be able to increase the number of scholarships awarded each year.

Style

Using traditional pencil, ink and watercolor media, Kitt’s style focused on the cute and whimsical side of life. Her work included fanart, fantasy, pet portraiture, mythology and whatever else struck her fancy.

Whimsical Art for All A world of color through traditional pencil and watercolor work.
